School Board Work Session | September 29, 2020 Report

New School Opening in Davenport, Florida called Davenport High School.

Economic Update

- The state loss $1.9 Billion in revenue.

- Polk County Public Schools could possibly lose $46.6 million

Any talk of loosing any staff?

  • No there is no talk of losing staff through December.

  • Staff may be moving from one school to another.

  • There is a hiring freeze except for ESE and ESOL school based positions.

Would salaries be cut for people who make more than veteran teachers (i.e district staff)?

  • No. But if salaries are to be reduced, it would start with District Staff and then Teacher Staff.

What about after December?

  • The representative said that it is likely there will be cuts during the second semester.

Have there been discussions with the state as to whether we could use the money that is currently being bargained for teachers raises to help keep us to float with the hope that everyone can keep their jobs?

  • No, but we can try to discuss that with the state.

  • Lynn Wilson sounds like he is pushing to protect jobs over teacher raises.

Cunningham mentioned that we are facing tough times regarding the budget and that the worst is yet to come rather that be January, May, and/or August.
